The role

Power cut from his own flesh.

Wagner's exiled sorcerer — desire mastered by mutilation, ruling by the wound he made.

Klingsor is the knight the Grail would not have. Refused the brotherhood, he did the one thing he believed would force purity onto himself — he cut the desire out of his body — and purity still refused him. What was left is the colder thing: appetite that can no longer be satisfied, only commanded. I sing him as a man who turned his own failure into a fortress.

He owns a single concentrated scene. Act II, his tower, his garden of flower-maidens grown to trap the pure — and Kundry, whom he wakes and bends to his will against Parsifal. The sacred spear is in his hand; everything he says is order, summons, contempt. There is no aria to hide behind, only conjuring and command.

The line is dark and declamatory, written low and driven hard, the orchestra grinding beneath it. The trap is to bluster. I keep him quiet where I can — resentment held under pressure carries further than rage. He does not shout his power; he states it, and waits to be obeyed.

— He maimed himself to be clean and was rejected anyway. Everything after that is revenge in a level voice.
